Deadline:  2016-01-15

Location:  Gainesville, FL 32611, USA

The Department of Physics at the University of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in theoretical astrophysics with a preference for data-intensive or computationally intensive research. In particular, we are interested in candidates whose research and/or collaboration involves ‘big data’ – such as handling and analyzing large sets of data or computationally intensive simulations. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Physics, Astrophysics or Astronomy. The candidate is expected to establish a broad, internationally competitive, and well-recognized research program and contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education.

This search and a parallel search in the Department of Astronomy represent a concerted effort by the University of Florida to expand its activities in Astrophysics. Between the two departments, faculty already bring complementary skills and perspectives to many problems of common interest. Examples include the study of large-scale structures, dark matter, and cosmology, observations of compact objects via X-rays, infrared and gravitational waves, and descriptions of their theoretical properties. This and future searches are expected to deepen and expand the collaboration between the departments in these and other areas. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: gravitational N-body simulations that study the formation of the current universe from planetary to cosmological scales; the simulation of gravitational wave sources for the emerging field of gravitational wave astrophysics; 21 cm tomography; studies of the microwave background; and/or studies of large scale structure based on upcoming surveys.

To receive full consideration, applications should be complete by January 15, 2016, although the position will remain open until filled. A complete application will include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement and three letters of reference. Applicants should ensure that all letters of reference have been sent directly to Ms Colson at mcolson[AT]ufl.edu before the deadline. All candidates must apply to job number 495242 through the UF Jobs website (external link above) where extra information is provided.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Florida is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Institution dedicated to building a broadly diverse and inclusive faculty and staff. Questions may be addressed to the search chair, Bernard Whiting (see Contact above).
