Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Materials Theory and Computation for High-Energy Physics and Quantum Sensing Postdoctoral Scholar. Work will focus on the description and design of quantum materials with applications to high-energy physics and quantum sensing using first-principles calculations.

Quantum materials is the term given to a new paradigm in condensed matter physics, encompassing materials with exotic physical properties that have potential technological importance. A burgeoning area of quantum materials and information is sensing and detection where quantum phenomena are used to measure a physical property.

The incumbent will lay the groundwork for a materials-specific understanding and manipulation of new functional quantum materials for sensing and detection using first-principles calculations. It will include close collaboration with other theorists and with experimentalists, both in condensed matter and other fields, to design and characterize quantum materials with functional properties. This appointment is joined between the Molecular Foundry and the Materials Science Division in the group of Dr. Sinead M. Griffin.
