Deadline:  2019-01-15

Location:  Warsaw, Poland

Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CAMK PAN) announces the competition for the post-doc position.

We are looking for a candidate with strong background in astrophysics for the modeling of gravitational-wave sources related to neutron stars. The knowledge of numerical methods in general relativity and scientific programming will be considered an advantage.

The winner of the competition will conduct research within the Sonata-Bis project entitled ”Transient sources of gravitational waves associated with stars neutrons: models and data analysis” in cooperation with dr. Michal Bejger. Detailed research tasks include astrophysics of transient gravitational waves from NS phenomena: dynamical collapses induced by the change in the equation of state, calculations of quasi-normal modes from ultra-compact stars, modeling the GW emission related to elasticity, magnetic field and accretion. The results will be immediately applied to the observations of LIGO and Virgo detectors via the collaboration within the Polish Virgo group.

We seek candidates holding the PhD title in the field of physics or astronomy (or a related field), or PhD students at the last stages of their doctoral thesis. The contract should start not later than April 1, 2018 (the candidate should be in possession of the PhD title at this time). An employment contract on an adjunct’s position is maximally up to three years. To apply for admission to the position please attach a copy of the PhD diploma (or the supervisor’s statement about the advancement of the PhD thesis), CV, list of scientific publications, two recommendation letters from independent researchers, and a self-presentation statement (concise information on the candidate’s previous achievements and experience, and scientific interests: the text should not exceed 3500 characters, including spaces).

Documents should be submitted by January 15, 2019 at the CAMK secretary’s office (ul. Bartycka 18, 00-716 Warsaw, tel. 022 3296100), or by e-mail, in the pdf format, to the recruitment[AT]camk.edu.pl . The contest will be resolved before the end of January 2019. For additional information please contact Michal Bejger (bejger[AT]camk.edu.pl).
