In keeping with its three pronged mandate of research, training and outreach, Perimeter Institute provides outstanding research training opportunities to students at various stages in their education, from Undergraduate to Master’s and Doctoral levels. Perimeter Institute is currently seeking a dynamic, ambitious and visionary leader to assume the position of Academic Program Director in spring 2014.
Working closely with Perimeter’s Director, Neil Turok, and Perimeter Faculty, and in collaboration with partnering universities, the Academic Program Director is charged with building upon the institute’s existing highly innovative training programs in theoretical physics, including:
– Perimeter’s Master’s program, Perimeter Scholars International
– The Perimeter Institute PhD program
– Advanced undergraduate and graduate fellowships and internships at Perimeter
Perimeter’s competitive advantage in providing such training is that it is relatively unconstrained compared to other institutions, giving high flexibility and responsiveness to new developments. Perimeter has generated enormous goodwill and interest internationally, allowing it to recruit many of the best researchers and lecturers worldwide. This in turn helps to attract the best students globally and take them to the cutting edge of research as quickly as possible.
Perimeter Scholars International
Perimeter’s Master’s program, Perimeter Scholars International has recently completed its 4th year of operation. The program recruits outstanding students internationally and focuses on developing strong independent research skills. The program has an annual intake of 30 -40 students. Lectures are provided by leading international experts in a 10-month, highly intensive program bringing the students to the cutting edge of research in a wide range of areas of theoretical physics. Graduates receive a Master of Physics degree from the University of Waterloo and a Perimeter Scholars International Certificate. The program is currently being re-worked into a Master-PhD program
PhD Studies
Perimeter Institute accepts exceptional students wishing to pursue full-time PhD studies under the supervision of a Perimeter faculty member. Students are enrolled in a PhD program at a partnering university, depending on where the Perimeter Supervisor is affiliated.
Undergraduate Research
Perimeter accepts applications from outstanding undergraduate students to carry out research projects which run each summer from May to mid-August. Successful applicants work with Postdoctoral Fellows at Perimeter on preselected projects.
Visiting Graduate Fellows
Through the Visiting Graduate Fellowship program, Perimeter Institute offers a unique opportunity for international physics PhD students to expand their perspectives and participate in various research activities at Perimeter for 4 to 12 months. Outstanding students work within their research field, while gaining valuable exposure to other fields of study.
Relationships with Academic Partners
Perimeter Institute is a non-degree granting institute, working in a highly collaborative fashion with university partners on the delivery of its training programs. Perimeter aims to serve as a focal point for the Canadian and international theoretical physics community. The Institute continuously searches for ways to build mutually beneficial relationships with other institutions, both within Canada and worldwide.

Applicants for the position of Academic Program Director should have a commitment and passion for interactive, student-centred, discovery-based learning. They should hold a PhD in Theoretical Physics, have senior administrative experience at the university level, strong existing relationships in the academic community and a thorough knowledge of physics curriculum at the undergraduate, masters and PhD levels. A good knowledge of the Canadian academic community is a definite asset.
