A 2+1 year postdoctoral position will become available as early as September 2024 in the Qubits and Spacetime Unit at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology led by Philipp Hoehn. The research of the unit lies broadly at the interface of quantum gravity, high-energy physics, quantum information and foundations, focusing on general questions in and around quantum gravity. Current research interests include finite regions, entropies and algebras in gauge theory and gravity, quantum reference frames, spacetime thermodynamics, gravitational observables, and quantum error correction in gauge theory and gravity.

Candidates with an interest in any of these or related topics are encouraged to apply.

OIST currently harbors several units in quantum gravity and quantum information science and regularly hosts international workshops, seminars and visitors in these areas, providing for a stimulating research environment. The unit will provide support for traveling and hosting collaborators. The Qubits and Spacetime Unit is a node of the international consortium Quantum Information Structure of Spacetime, funded by the Templeton Foundation.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will contribute to the research program of the Qubits and Spacetime Unit, but is also encouraged to carry out self-designed projects. Active participation in group seminars and meetings is expected, as well as in assisting with their organization. The successful candidate may also contribute to mentoring students.

Qualifications:
Completed PhD in theoretical physics or mathematics by the time of employment. Background in one or several of the following topics: quantum gravity, quantum information, quantum field theory, quantum foundations, quantum many-body physics or mathematical physics. Fluency in English.
