Deadline:  2024-06-28

Location:  Sheffield, UK

The new School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield plans to support applications for long-term (five- to eight-year) fellowships in 2024/25 in the areas of Gravitation and Cosmology, in particular for the University Research Fellowship and Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship (both funded by the Royal Society) and for the Ernest Rutherford Fellowship (funded by STFC). These are advanced fellowships targeting early career scientists who have the potential to become leaders in their field. Substantial postdoctoral experience (typically around 3-8 years) and demonstration of an independent research program are essential to be considered for these fellowships.

Details of these fellowship schemes and the application procedure can be found on:

The application deadline for the University Research Fellowship is 10 September 2024, the deadline for the Ernest Rutherford Fellowship is 1 October 2024, and the deadline for the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship is 29 October 2024.

We are looking for candidates complementing our existing research in cosmology, general relativity, black hole physics, quantum field theory on curved spacetime, quantum gravity, holography and mathematical physics. Current staff members in these areas include Eleonora Di Valentino, Sam Dolan, Marco Fazzi, Steffen Gielen, Carsten van de Bruck and Elizabeth Winstanley. We are a very active group currently hosting 4 postdocs and 16 PhD students, plus several visitors: https://gravity-cosmology.sites.sheffield.ac.uk/

The general policy of the Faculty of Science at Sheffield is that all holders of five-year plus independent fellowships will be offered a permanent position, subject to performance: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/science/research/fellowships

Expressions of interest should be sent to Dr Marco Fazzi at m.fazzi[AT]sheffield.ac.uk. They should include a full CV and publication list; a research proposal is not necessary although a tentative project title or indication of proposed topics could be included. We are also happy to answer any informal enquiries. We will start reviewing applications after 28 June 2024 and plan to conclude the internal selection process in early July

We are committed to diversity and equality within our community and particularly welcome expressions of interest from minority groups, women, persons with disabilities and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
