Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Department of Mathematics at the University of York to work under the supervision of Dr Benito A Juarez Aubry on the EPSRC Fellowship Grant “Semiclassical gravity: conceptual and mathematical foundations.”
Department: The Department of Mathematics at the University of York is a vibrant community of mathematicians with a wide range of research interests, including a strong group working in the area of mathematical physics.
Role: The aim of the project is to obtain rigorous results on semiclassical gravity. This includes understanding whether and when the theory is well posed, characterising its space of initial data, studying questions related to the existence of runaway solutions and understanding what is the domain of applicability of the theory. The project will also aim at rigorously studying particular scenarios of interest in physics, such as radiating black holes, gravitational waves or cosmology, in a semiclassical gravity setting, and understand how quantum effects lead to “beyond general relativity” deviations.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed: Candidates will have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant area of Mathematics or Physics. An ideal candidate will have a strong mathematical background and experience in working within at least one of the research areas relevant to the project. This includes, for example, algebraic quantum field theory, gravitational physics, mathematical relativity or quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. The applicant should also show great potential at mastering new areas and techniques.
Candidates must submit the following documents when applying:
Cover letter
CV including publication list
Research statement setting out expertise and track record relevant to the project.
Letter of application setting out when PhD is expected to be awarded if it is still awaited.
Interview date: Week commencing 11th November 2024
