Dear colleagues,

The workshop on “Effective fields theory, gravity and fluid dynamics” will take place from 16 – 18 December 2024 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The registration is now open until 31 October 2024.

Summary:
Black holes are inherently connected with fluid dynamics. For example, when black holes approach equilibrium, relaxation processes are governed by complex eigenfrequencies called quasinormal modes. In addition to determining the ringdown pattern of coalescing astrophysical black holes, quasinormal modes of black holes in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetimes dictate the onset of fluid dynamics in strongly coupled gauge theories described by the holographic correspondence.

Effective field theory (EFT) is a crucial tool for systematically investigating fluid dynamics and gravitational phenomena. Recasting relativistic fluid dynamics as an EFT has led to recent breakthroughs, solving the causality and stability problems that plagued previous formulations of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics for decades.

The workshop is intended to be highly interdisciplinary to seed new ideas and collaborations beyond what would be possible at more topically focused workshops.

Invited speakers include: Cliff Burgess* – Pau Figueras – Cynthia Keeler – Pavel Kovtun – Luis Lehner* – Ira Rothstein

* To be confirmed

We look forward to welcoming you in Urbana-ChampaignHelviOn behalf of the organizers (Patrick Draper, Jorge Noronha, Hector O. Silva, Helvi Witek)
