The Center for Gravitational Physics (CGP) at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for the position of Gravity Fellow, with a focus on the applications of data science and machine learning to fundamental problems in gravitational wave physics and multimessenger astrophysics. Gravity Fellow will have the opportunity to conduct independent research and to collaborate with the faculty of the CGP (Hsin-Yu Chen, Pablo Laguna, Richard Matzner, Deirdre Shoemaker, and Aaron Zimmerman). This position is equivalent to a senior postdoctoral fellowship, starting in September 2025. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year subject to available funding and research performance.
This position is open to candidates with expertise in gravitational-wave physics, multi-messenger astrophysics, and numerical simulations related to compact binary coalescence. Gravity Fellow is expected to have experience in data analysis, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence as applied to these research areas.
Fellow will benefit from collaboration with other faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students at the CGP and within the larger Weinberg Institute. Professors Chen, Shoemaker and Zimmerman are members of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the LISA Consortium, and a successful candidate will have the opportunity to join or continue membership in these collaborations. Fellow will also benefit from interactions with members of the Weinberg Theory Group, the Department of Astronomy, and the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences.
Successful candidate will also benefit from living in Austin, a large city known for a thriving live music scene, artistic culture, and great food. It is widely regarded as the “live music capital of the world” and an overall great city to live and work in.
