Location:  Singapore

We are pleased to announce a workshop titled “Mathematical Methods for the General Relativistic Two-body Problem”, which is to be held from 11 to 15 August 2025 at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Applications for this workshop are now open on the event website [ https://ims.nus.edu.sg/events/generalrelativistictwobodyproblem/ ]

By the mid-2030s, we will be able to observe astrophysical gravitational-wave sources across multiple frequency bands, which will greatly advance our understanding of the physical Universe. Asymmetric binary systems will be a main source of gravitational waves, particularly in the multi-band era. The best way to model asymmetric binaries is to expand Einstein’s field equations about the small mass ratio of the system. The small mass ratio of these systems leads to unique mathematical challenges in the modelling and statistical analysis of their gravitational-wave signals, as well as their broader characterisation in the active astrophysical environments where they typically form.

The aim of this week-long workshop is to provide a forum for exchanging ideas and updates on the significant challenges associated with modelling and interpreting gravitational-wave signals from asymmetric binary system as a source for LISA. The workshop will be structured along the three main themes of theory, computation and science, and each theme will be addressed through a combination of invited talks and discussion sessions. The participants will consist of experts across these areas.

To facilitate productive interaction, the workshop will be capped at 40 participants, and will allocate plenty of time for discussion and collaboration while limiting the number of talks each day. With support from the IMS, we might be able to support a limited numbers of early-career researchers in participating in this event. Please note that accommodation is the only available support.

Applications will be accepted until all workshop openings are filled, but we recommend applying before 16 May 2025 for full consideration, particularly those who would like to be considered for the financial support from IMS.

Please contact nusgwgroup[AT]gmail.com for any queries. We look forward to welcoming you this summer in Singapore!
