The Physics Department at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for PhD positions from outstanding students, offering opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research in fundamental theoretical physics. Our research spans a wide range of topics, including loop quantum gravity, holography, classical and quantum black holes, cosmology, numerical relativity, topological quantum field theory, topological phases of matter, quantum information, and mathematical physics.
FAU is home to one of the largest gravitational physics groups in the United States, with five professors dedicated to classical and quantum gravity. The research team led by Professors Christopher Beetle, Jonathan Engle, and Muxin Han contributes a significant part within the international quantum gravity community. This expertise is further strengthened by Professor Wolfgang Tichy leading the research on the numerical-relativity simulations of neutron star and black hole binaries, and by Professor Warner Miller leading the research on discrete geometries and quantum entanglement. The department’s research excellence also extends to theoretical condensed matter physics and quantum information, where Professors Yichen Hu and Han Fu lead a vigorous program exploring topological phases of matter and their relation to quantum computation. Professor Han Fu also works on nonequilibrium dynamics in cold atom systems, which is closely related to implementation of current quantum computers and simulators.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is a member of the State University System of Florida and was the first public university established in southeast Florida. The university has experienced rapid growth in recent years and is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as among “R1:Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”, the highest designation for US research universities. FAU’s main campus is easily accessible and offers beautiful landscapes and convenient student life in the city of Boca Raton, part of the vibrant Miami metropolitan area.
Application deadline for enrollment next Fall is Jan 15th, 2026 (later submission will be still reviewed until all posts are filled).
