We invite applications for a PhD position in theoretical and mathematical gravitational physics. The doctoral project is expected to start in Fall 2026 and will focus on formal but fundamental aspects of black hole physics.
Funding for this position is provided by a synergy grant between the Institutes of Astrophysics (PI Porfyriadis) and Applied and Computational Mathematics (PI Fournodavlos) at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete.
The successful applicant will be enrolled in the PhD program of the Department of Physics at the adjacent University of Crete and, in addition to the above Institutes, the PhD student will also join the Crete Center for Theoretical Physics (CCTP). Between the three institutes, the student will be part of an international research environment that includes numerous physicists and mathematicians with interests in gravitational physics that range from theoretical and observational astrophysics, to holography and string theory, to PDE analysis of the Einstein equations.
Applicants must hold a Bachelors and/or Masters degree in physics, mathematics or a related area. The successful candidate will have an excellent academic track record. A graduate-level course in General Relativity is considered an important advantage.
