Location:  Bucaramanga Colombia

Starting Sept 2015, the Relativity and Astroparticle Group at the Universidad Industrial de Santander offers a PostDoc position to work on Cosmo-Geophysics Muon detection of Volcano Activity in Colombia (Galeras and Nevado del Ruiz volcano) and in the LAGO (Latin American Giant Observatory http://lagoproject.org ) Collaboration

Job description:
MuTe (for Muon Telescope) is an experiment funded by Departamento Administrativo de Ciencia,Tecnologia e Innovacion – Colciencias aiming to study through astroparticle techniques the inner structure and the activity of important Colombian Volcanos: Galeras and Nevado del Ruiz. Muon flux, through the volcanic structures, will be detected by an innovative portable muon telescope. These measurements could provide essential insights into the geophysical and geomorphological mechanisms that lead to volcano eruptions that could affect the population around those places.

The LAGO (Latin American Giant Observatory) project is an extended Astroparticle Observatory at global scale. It is mainly oriented to basic research on three branches of Astroparticle physics: the Extreme Universe, Space Weather phenomena, and Atmospheric Radiation at ground level. The LAGO detection network consists of single or small arrays of particle detectors at ground level, spanning over different sites located at significantly different latitudes (currently from Mexico up to the Antarctic region) and different altitudes (from sea level up to more than 5000 meters over sea level), covering a huge range of geomagnetic rigidity cut-offs and atmospheric absorption/reaction levels.

We are looking for a candidate with some high energy instrumentation and good programming skills in experimental HEP/astroparticle data processing to further develop the data acquisition system for the Muon Telescope. Experience in experimental high energy data processing is mandatory, and in astroparticle techniques is desired. Latinoamerican PhD are very welcome to apply

The duration of this position is one year, with the possibility of a renewal for an additional period. Applicants for this position should have a PhD (obtained after January 2010) in experimental particle/astroparticle physics, or in a related field with the equivalent combination of training and experience. In addition to exceptional leadership abilities, the applicant must also have the potential to develop into an outstanding teacher at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a brief description of research interests that could match with MuTe/LAGO experiments, and arrange for three letters of recommendation. All application materials should be transmitted by e-mail, before May 31nd 2015 to
