Herbert Pfister passed away on Wednesday, 16.9.2015 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and five grand children.
Herbert was Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Tuebingen where he established one of the few research groups in general relativity and gravitation in Germany in the early 1980’s. His research was driven by a deep interest in the fundamental aspects of the theory. In that spirit many of his papers were devoted to the discussion of simple models of general relativistic systems from which he drew conclusions concerning the extent to which Machian ideas are realised in general relativity.
