Project:
Semiclassical gravity describes the effective interactions of quantum matter with classical gravity at scales between those of classical and quantum gravity. It offers important insights but also highlights tensions in gravity-quantum unification. Important predictions rely on semiclassical gravity arguments, such black hole radiation (and evaporation) and the formation of structure in cosmology.

However, the mathematical and conceptual foundations of semiclassical gravity are poorly understood. This PhD project will support the goals of EPSRC Fellowship Grant EP/Y014510/1 in carrying out a rigorous study of the foundations of this theory, using state-of-the-art mathematical techniques in quantum physics and gravity, and characterising semiclassical gravity’s regime of applicability with full precision.

You will be working with Dr Benito A Juarez Aubry and Prof Chris Fewster in the Department of Mathematics.

Eligibility:
Open to UK (home) students only. Applications are invited from students who aim to commence their PhD studies in September 2025. Applicants should have completed an Honours undergraduate degree or a Masters degree in Mathematics or Physics by the start date. The successful applicant should be self-motivated and have a keen interest in learning and applying mathematical techniques to contribute significantly to the project’s goal.

How to apply:
