Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Black Hole Physics: Exact Solutions in GR and Scalar-Tensor Theories
Host Institution: Universidad de Tarapaca’
Location: Chile
Application Deadline: March 15, 2025
Overview
The research group led by Dr. Adolfo Cisterna at Universidad de Tarapaca’, Chile, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in gravitation. The research focuses on the study of exact black hole solutions in General Relativity and modified gravity theories of the Scalar-Tensor type, including techniques for their construction. The position is expected to begin in April 2026 and is funded by the Chilean state agency FONDECYT.
We seek an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to contribute to cutting-edge research on the construction of exact spacetimes, black holes, exact gravitational waves, their geometrical properties, algebraic classification, physical interpretation, black hole thermodynamics, and potential astrophysical signatures. Candidates with experience in solution-generating techniques are especially encouraged to apply.
This postdoctoral position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse network of researchers in Chile and internationally, including partners in the Czech Republic and France.
Research Focus
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Adolfo Cisterna, exploring various techniques for constructing exact spacetime solutions in General Relativity, electrovacuum, and scalar-tensor theories. The research will encompass a range of properties such as rotation, acceleration, NUT charge, and radiative behavior, with a particular focus on black holes and exact gravitational waves.
Responsibilities
– Conduct independent and collaborative research in gravitational physics.
– Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present them at national and international conferences.
– Potentially assist in supervising graduate and undergraduate students.
– Participate in team meetings, seminars, and the organization of international conferences hosted by the research group.
Qualifications
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
– A Ph.D. in theoretical gravity, obtained no more than four years before the application deadline (expected by May 2025).
– Strong background in classical General Relativity, black hole solutions, scalar-tensor theories, solution-generating techniques, algebraic classification of spacetimes, black hole thermodynamics, and related topics.
– Experience with specialized software such as Maple, GRtensor, and/or Mathematica.
– A solid track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
– Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
– Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Offer Details
Duration: 3 years (full-time position).
Salary: Approximately 2000 euros per month (a competitive salary for living in Chile).
Benefits: Includes health insurance and an annual travel allowance of approximately 4500 euros.
Research Collaboration: Opportunities to work with leading experts in Chile, the Czech Republic, France, and Greece. The fellow may travel for research purposes for up to six months per year, subject to prior discussion with the supervisor.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit the following documents by March 15, 2025:
– A cover letter (maximum 2 pages) describing research interests and motivation for applying.
– A detailed curriculum vitae (CV) including a list of publications.
– Two recommendation letters (to be sent directly by the referees).
– A sample of written work and a brief research statement (maximum 3 pages) that ideally connects with the work conducted by Dr. Adolfo Cisterna and his collaborators.
Application Procedure: Submit all required documents electronically as a single PDF file to Adolfo.cisterna.r@mail.pucv.cl. Only complete applications will be considered. The selected candidate will be guided through the FONDECYT postdoctoral grant application process, which is expected to open between the end of March and the end of May. The successful applicant in the FONDECYT call will officially join the research group under the specified conditions and benefits.
Funding and Salary
The position is funded by the FONDECYT agency. Once the call officially opens, detailed application instructions will be available at: https://anid.cl/concursos/concurso-fondecyt-de-postdoctorado-2026/. Members of the research group will provide assistance with the application process as needed.
The monthly salary is approximately 2000 euros, which includes health insurance and an annual travel allowance of 4500 euros. The fellow has the freedom to travel for up to six months per year, subject to supervisor approval, with expected visits to collaborating research groups in the Czech Republic, France, and Greece.
